ICSI with NGS

ICSI with NGS

This client was experiencing infertility and had been trying for many years to become pregnant, but was unsuccessful. As both partners got older, they became more concerned about the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in their baby if they were to conceive.

They also had a family history of a baby born with chromosomal abnormalities. Becoming pregnant when you are older carries a greater risk of complications for the baby, and this client was very concerned about that.

After doing some research online the client read reviews of Beyond IVF that seemed to meet all their requirements for treatment options and they decided to meet Dr. Ton to discuss their case. The best way to reduce the risk of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus is to use ICSI and then test the embryos by extracting cells from the embryos for next-generation sequencing (NGS) to check all 21 pairs of chromosomes for any problems.

NGS also helps in the selection of the best embryos with the highest chances of implantation and reduces the risk of miscarriage in the first trimester.

On the second day of the client’s cycle she began the ICSI process, but after egg collection and fertilization, only 5 embryos made it to day 5, and only 1 was found to have no chromosomal abnormalities after NGS.

This demonstrated that without ICSI and NGS, there was a high chance that if the client became pregnant, the child would have chromosomal abnormalities. The 1 healthy embryo was considered the “golden embryo” and was of very high quality, perfect for transferring into the uterus.

Before transferring the embryo, Dr. Ton adjusted the treatment for the client (a technique specific to Beyond IVF) to increase the chances of success as much as possible for the one viable embryo.

Eighteen days after the transfer the client was scheduled to check hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) levels, which indicate pregnancy, and levels were as hoped. For accuracy Dr. Ton scheduled the client in for another appointment after three days for an ultrasound to look for the yolk sac. The golden embryo did not disappoint!
