Testing AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) can increase the chances of successful pregnancy for individuals with fertility issues.

The cause of infertility can be detected through hormones in the body. For women, the AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) level can indicate whether you are infertile or not. This hormone is related to the ovaries, which play a key role in reproduction. However, many people are still unaware of the actual role of AMH, how important it is, and what it means when AMH levels are imbalanced, along with how to address this issue.

Get to know AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone)

AMH (Anti-Müllerian Hormone) is a hormone produced by the egg cells in a woman's ovaries. It indicates the functioning ability of the ovaries and the number of eggs that can be produced at that time. AMH levels are high in women of reproductive age and gradually decrease until they are depleted as a woman ages or enters menopause.

AMH hormone testing and pregnancy

The AMH hormone level test is used to assess ovarian function. Through a blood test, it can determine whether the ovaries are functioning normally and how many eggs remain in the ovaries. This test helps evaluate the chances of pregnancy and provides valuable information for doctors to suggest ways to increase the likelihood of conception for women.

In assisted reproductive technologies such as IVF or ICSI, the AMH level is also used to predict how the ovaries will respond to stimulation medications. It helps determine the appropriate dosage of medication required to stimulate egg production effectively.

The steps for testing AMH hormone are as follows

The nurse will first take a basic medical history.
Then, the nurse will take you to weigh yourself and measure your blood pressure. Afterward, the nurse will take you to see the doctor.
When you meet the doctor, the doctor will ask for your medical history, such as any chronic diseases, antibiotics used, any previous chromosome abnormalities, and family history of chronic diseases.
A blood sample will be taken and sent for AMH testing to check for potential abnormalities and to assess ovarian function.
You will wait for the test results, which will take approximately 2-3 hours.

The normal range for AMH levels

AMH levels higher than 4 ng/ml are considered high and may indicate a risk for Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), which is characterized by multiple cysts in the ovaries.

AMH levels between 1 – 4 ng/ml are considered normal.

AMH levels between 0.3 – 1 ng/ml are considered low, which may indicate that the woman has a lower number of eggs available, increasing the risk of infertility.

AMH levels lower than 0.3 ng/ml are considered very low, indicating that the woman has very few eggs left and is at a high risk of infertility. If pregnancy is desired, it is important to consult a doctor.

Women who want to check if they have an adequate number of eggs for pregnancy.

Women under 35 years old who have been trying to conceive for more than 12 months.

Women over 35 years old who have been trying to conceive for more than 6 months.

Women who want to freeze eggs for future family planning.

Women who have undergone cancer treatment with chemotherapy or ovarian surgery.

Women who need to undergo chemotherapy or have ovarian surgery in the near future.

Conclusion

AMH hormone is produced by egg cells and can indicate the number of eggs available during that period, as well as whether the ovaries are functioning normally. If the AMH level is high, it may indicate a risk of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). On the other hand, if the AMH level is low, it suggests the possibility of infertility (the AMH level, both high and low, is compared with typical levels for the same age group).

Thus, testing AMH is important for those planning to conceive. If you have been trying naturally for 6-12 months without success, it is recommended to consult a doctor for guidance on treatment options. If you're unable to visit the doctor in person, you can inquire further via Line: @beyondivf

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
