9 Years of Waiting, One Miracle!

Husband’s Low Sperm Count – 9 Years of Waiting, Finally Pregnant with ICSI at Beyond IVF!

The main cause of infertility in this case was the husband’s poor sperm quality, making it difficult to conceive naturally. After trying for 9 years, the couple decided to seek treatment and found Beyond IVF, where they were treated by Dr. Ton Poonsak.

Dr. Ton recommended a thorough health check for both partners to determine the exact cause of infertility and plan the most effective treatment. The results showed that the husband had a low sperm count, requiring ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) for conception. Additionally, NGS (Next-Generation Sequencing) was advised to screen the embryos for chromosomal abnormalities, as the wife was nearing the age group at risk for infertility, which could increase the chance of genetic disorders like Down syndrome.

Once the wife’s menstrual cycle started, she began 10 days of ovarian stimulation before undergoing egg retrieval, collecting 38 eggs. After culturing, 10 embryos reached the blastocyst stage (Day 5 embryos). Upon chromosomal screening, only 3 embryos were normal.

After 15 days post-embryo transfer, a blood test revealed an HCG level of 4,126 mIU/ml, confirming pregnancy! A follow-up ultrasound detected a gestational sac, proving the pregnancy was successful.

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
