The patient wanted to undergo ICSI with chromosome screening due to a family history of congenital disorders.

This patient struggled with infertility for many years and was unable to conceive naturally. As both partners aged, they became increasingly concerned about the risk of genetic abnormalities in their future child. Additionally, there was a family history of congenital disorders in babies conceived naturally at an older age, which heightened their anxiety.

After researching online, the patient came across success stories from Beyond IVF, which aligned with their concerns and treatment goals. They decided to consult Dr. Ton personally for a tailored fertility treatment plan. To minimize the risk of genetic abnormalities, Dr. Ton recommended ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection) combined with chromosome screening. The screening process involved extracting cells from the embryo's placenta for NGS (Next Generation Sequencing), which checks for chromosomal abnormalities, including trisomy 21 (Down syndrome)—one of the most common genetic disorders. This genetic screening also helps reduce implantation failure and first-trimester miscarriages.

On day 2 of the patient’s menstrual cycle, they began the ICSI process. After egg retrieval and embryo culture to the blastocyst stage (5-day embryos), only 5 embryos remained viable. When sent for chromosomal screening, only one embryo passed all genetic criteria, confirming that without this screening, the couple risked having a child with genetic disorders. However, this single embryo was a "golden embryo", of excellent quality and ready for transfer.

Before the transfer, Dr. Ton applied specialized treatment adjustments (Beyond IVF's exclusive techniques) to maximize the chances of implantation. 18 days after the transfer, the patient underwent an hCG hormone test, which indicated a high probability of pregnancy. To confirm, Dr. Ton scheduled an ultrasound three days later, where a gestational sac was detected, confirming a successful pregnancy with their one and only golden embryo.

Treatment: ICSI + NGS

ICSI (Injecting sperm directly into the egg for higher success rates)
NGS (Chromosomal screening to detect abnormalities)

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
