How can you tell if your husband is infertile?
Professor Poonsak Suchanavanich responded to this case, stating that if a woman has had children with her previous husband but is now living with a new husband and hasn't been able to conceive as easily as before, despite trying naturally for several years, the process of investigating the cause of infertility is essentially the same for everyone.
The method that Dr. Ton recommends is:
Semen analysis: The quality of sperm is determined by four factors:
-
Volume of semen per ejaculation: This is important because when intercourse occurs, the sperm in the vagina needs to dissolve and combine with the cervical mucus, swim through the cervix, and then travel up through the uterus and fallopian tubes to meet the egg at the end of the fallopian tube.
-
Sperm concentration: Normally, there should be 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen. If there is a sufficient number of sperm, they will be able to swim toward the destination.
-
Sperm motility: The sperm need to move properly for successful fertilization.
-
Sperm head morphology: The head of the sperm contains the genetic material and must be of normal shape for successful fertilization.
Preparation before the test:
- Refrain from ejaculation for at least 5-7 days before the test.
-
Ensure adequate rest.
It is not recommended to withhold ejaculation for too long before the test. While it may result in a higher sperm count, the sperm may be old, and therefore may not be able to swim properly. This can lead to abnormal test results, even though the sperm may simply be aged. On the other hand, if ejaculation was only recently performed, there may be fewer new sperm produced. This could result in a low sperm count. Therefore, to ensure accurate results, it is important to refrain from ejaculation for about 5-7 days before the sperm quality test. This will provide more reliable data.
How can you know if you are infertile?
- The amount of semen released is lower than normal.
-
No sperm is found in the semen.
-
The sperm is deformed and unable to fertilize an egg.
If any of these three symptoms are present, the doctor will diagnose infertility.
