This client was just 33 and considered young when it comes to infertility. This client had also been pregnant before and had one child, but experienced recurrent miscarriages. Just a few weeks after becoming pregnant with their second baby, the fetus stopped growing.
This happened several times and the client realized that they were likely experiencing infertility. They also tried to get pregnant for one year without success. The client came to Beyond IVF to talk to Dr. Ton who was their doctor for their first baby and because they had friends with the same problems who were able to become pregnant after seeing him.
After meeting with Dr. Ton it was revealed that before the last miscarriage, the client had undergone NIPT (noninvasive prenatal testing) and results showed abnormalities in the fetus, which is likely the cause of recurrent miscarriages.
Dr. Ton then recommended ICSI with NGS to decrease the risk of miscarriage and ensure a healthy fetus since NGS screens for Trisomy 21 (Down syndrome), Trisomy 18 (Edward’s syndrome), and Trisomy 13 (Patau’s syndrome), which often cause successful pregnancies that end in miscarriage. When the body detects an abnormality in the fetus, it will usually stop its growth.
When the client understood the cause of her recurrent miscarriages she decided immediately to try ICSI and as expected, of the 10 embryos sent for testing, only 3 did not have chromosomal abnormalities. This clearly demonstrated that the reason she had so many miscarriages was because the fetus was not healthy.
Before transferring the embryo, the client and doctor discussed selecting the best quality embryo for transfer to increase the chances of a successful pregnancy. The client’s best embryo had a 5BA grade, with no chromosomal abnormalities.
The embryo may not have been the very best on the scale for embryo quality, but with appropriate care from an expert doctor in balancing the client’s hormones, pregnancy is still likely. So even if you are “younger” when we think about fertility, chromosomal problems can prevent you from staying pregnant.
Treatment: ICSI
Additional Techniques: Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and next-generation sequencing (NGS)
